Why does my pool have yellow/brown sediment collecting at the bottom but when I brush or vacuum it away it disappears?
Mustard Algae

Does the pool have yellow/brown sediment collecting on the bottom especially in the seams of the liner?  When brushed or vacuumed does it “disappear” into the water?

• Most mistake this sediment for dirt and do not treat it immediately, which leads to more areas of growth.  If brushed or vacuumed and it returns the next day, it is most likely mustard algae.

• Mustard algae can survive dry outside of the pool and will make its way into equipment, pool cleaning tools and onto toys and floats.  It is important when treating for mustard algae to treat everything you think has made contact with the pool water.

• You will also notice a significant chlorine reading with this type of algae in the pool.  Chlorine does not do the best job killing mustard algae and an algicide specific to this algae type should be used for treatment.  BioGuard Banish is our best mustard algae killer.  It has a strong copper base that will last in the water continuing to kill any additional growth for up to 2 weeks.  DO NOT use another algicide for 2 weeks after adding the Banish.

• The correct process for Banish is to shock the pool with a regular shock dosage (even if you have a chlorine reading) and wait ONE HOUR.  Add all items to the pool that may have touched the pool water and the hour after shocking add Banish to the pool at the rate of 1 quart per 20, 000 gallons of pool water.  Run pool 24 hours and vacuum any dead sediment.

• You may continue to see spots of algae but the Banish may take a few days to kill all the mustard and you should keep brushing and vacuuming sediment.  Please bring another water sample to the lab if the algae persists.
